Hi Sean and Georgina:
I wanted to take a moment to thank you for extending an invitation to attend the Inquiry Fair last week. I was very impressed by the maturity and confidence that your students displayed when I had spoke with them. It was clear that they had chosen topics that were of interest to them and the passion they had for their subjects came through in their ability to discuss in depth, both the subject matter and aspects of the topics that fell outside the scope of their set presentation material. I appreciated how they were able to relate the knowledge they had gained in the course of their research to their own situations or issues impacting the community around them. I found it interesting as well how a number of the topics I learned about could easily have reflected either a gender studies or criminology focus, demonstrating how many such issues have numerous facets and can be viewed from multiple perspectives.
For me the Fair is a great example of how opening up a potentially generic class assignment to a broad range of possibilities makes learning come to life. The students had to demonstrate mastery of the standard elements of identifying a topic, undertaking research, synthesizing their conclusions and presenting their findings, all essential skills that they will call upon for years to come. Being able to skills to issues of personal significance gave this work meaning and likely proved to be a more impactful learning experience than might have been hoped for otherwise. It certainly made for some interesting presentations!
As with my last experience, I could have spent far more than the allotted time engaging with students and learning from them. This is a fantastic event, one that I look forward to attending again in the future.
Yours sincerely
