We are well on our way for our month long Sustainability Project! This is an ambitious project, one in which two classes are working on the same mural. When this mural is complete, we will make self portraits out of our garbage, exploring the question: "What does our garbage say about us?"
So far, we have collaborated on the initial design for our mural. To do this, we mashed up a lot of approaches, from drawings to collage, textiles to graffiti. It was a challenge to incorporate 50 artists responses to the question, what does sustainability mean to you? After watching the movie, Wasteland, our class viewed the sustainability poster. We came to a consensus in understanding that for true sustainability to occur, the three aspects of "fair share", "earth care," and "people care" needed to be incorporated, as the poster depicts.
However, interestingly, both B block and D block determined that without "self care," nothing remains stable. As a result, our mural contains words such as "stable" and "turning us into us." Each class responds to what the other class has contributed that day, truly making this a collaborative process, one in which we are rigorously "speaking art."
Perhaps my favourite part of this mural is the idea of the braid: the three elements of sustainability threaded together to create a fabric with integrity. As someone added, "three braids braided together as one."
Please see the "gallery" link to view pictures of the process!
