Have students group chat and come up with a list of possible topics (that link to the short stories we have studied, in prep for synthesis essay). Throw these up on the board, and demonstrate how to group according to theme. Have students choose three that they feel pulled towards, and create a literary log of evidence from the text in the forms of quotes and page numbers. This is a good time to do a mini-lesson on how to cite in MLA format.
